Il vescovo emerito di Albany, che ha accolto di aver coperto abusi sessuali da parte di alcuni preti e che è accusato in prima persona di averli compiuti, ha formalmente chiesto a Papa Francesco di essere rimosso dal sacerdozio.
Howard Hubbard , 84 anni, ha annunciato la sua decisione in una dichiarazione rilasciata venerdì, giorno in cui le Nazioni Unite hanno indetto la Giornata mondiale per la prevenzione e la guarigione dallo sfruttamento, dall’abuso e dalla violenza sessuale sui minori.
Hubbard ha affermato di voler essere “laicizzato”, ossia di essere sottratto alla giurisdizione ecclesiastica, perché non più capace di essere sacerdote – data la politica della Chiesa statunitense che impedisce ai sacerdoti indagati di svolgere il loro ministero. Se accettata, la laicizzazione solleverebbe Hubbard dai suoi obblighi di celibato.
Chiedere al Papa la laicizzazione volontaria è una mossa piuttosto insolita, soprattutto per un vescovo e per un prete che nega le accuse rivolte nei suoi confronti. Di solito, infatti, i sacerdoti chiedono la laicizzazione se le prove di abuso contro di loro sono schiaccianti o se vogliono lasciare il sacerdozio per sposarsi.
