Arrivato nel paese nel 1998, avrebbe commesso un abuso contro un ventenne: arrestato, ma rilasciato su cauzione.
La notizia arriva praticamente dagli antipodi: a Mthatha, cittadina orientale del Sudafrica, un nuovo caso di abusi nel clero cattolico. Un sacerdote 68enne è stato arrestato con l’accusa di aver violentato un ragazzo di 20 anni nella casa di accoglienza che gestiva.

La procura di Mthatha ha concesso una cauzione di 1000 rupie martedì e il sacerdote riapparirà presso la corte il 2 febbraio”, ha detto il procuratore nazionale Luxolo Tyali. Il prete, 68 anni, è stato arrestato domenica e ha chiesto la cauzione già lunedì. La violenza sarebbe stata perpetrata nel 2009.
Subito arriva la reazione della Chiesa locale: sapevamo, e abbiamo agito.
Un portavoce per la Chiesa, Padre Chris Townsend afferma che gli abusi sessuali furono visti in una luce molto seria dal vescovo di Mthatha, Sithembele Siphuka. “Tutte le lamentele verso il clero e i lavoratori religiosi nella Diocesi di Mthatha sono stati gestiti secondo il protocollo per le indagini sulle lamentele contro sacerdoti…riguardo agli abusi sessuali su minori, una linea guida della Conferenza Sudafricana dei Vescovi. I vescovi hanno già aperto una indagine preliminare sul caso, ha detto.
